considering doing a T5 swap in the stang to make it more fun and have more gears and less suckage. Junkyard T5 plus a rebuild by me= lots of money saved.

How hard can it be?

Not a manual, but will be doing it to a T5 in an S10 this winter. Automatics are not that bad and there are many more parts to them.

Yes, I have rebuilt a manual trans before. All information on how to do so, however, was in the Land-Rover workshop manual. Why? Because 1960s Rover/Leyland were nucking futs, that's why.

You can certainly do it yourself, if you have a source on bearing pre-load specs, etc. etc.

Yea it doesn't look too bad I think it is just intimidating because

1. Never done it before

2.Dont quite know how they work

3. Looking at all the parts that look similar its overwhelming I might lose something!

Luckily there is a great looking book I plan on buying.

As long as you lay out the parts in order as you disassemble, then replace the parts as you put them on, you should be fine. I wish to purchase a T5 for my Mustang at some point as well, so I will be rebuilding it and will try to document the swap.

Tried it. Didn't go well. Took it to a guy to finish up. I don't think it's going to be worth the headache, it's not so eay. Why don't you look on ebay? I got an updated T5 for my old Mustang for around 800 bucks..

You need a ton of room, a case of brake cleaner for parts washing, and the knowledge that if you screw it up you really aren't out anything. Read the book a few times and then tear into it. T5's (like everything) have some weaknesses than you should address while you are in there.

Isn't the Tremec T5 total weaksauce? I've at least heard that's the case for the T5 in the 3rd gen Camaro and Firebird with the 305 TPI.

What year mustang? I've got a 67 that i'm planning on t5 swapping from a c4 auto within the next 12 to 18 months. Ive got a lot of videos and info about this saved on my comp, when I get home in 10 mins, ill post them here. I think it would be cool to do the swap at the same time as someome else on oppo.

Instead of a T5 why not, at a minimum, a T-45?

It's not all that difficult. You can find a T5 Rebuild/Service manual online here - T5 Rebuild Manual

T-45 > T-5

Or a 3650 even.

But, regardless the main thing I've hard problems with is the input shaft play. You'll probably want to invest or at least rent a dial to check the lateral play in the input shaft after you put it all back together. I've never had issues with it myself, using the stock shim alignment always worked just fine, but the pros say otherwise.

Pretty much yes. The world class which is the better only has a 300lb/ft rating. Should be fine for my jank 2.3.

A Tremec T-45

The food change of Tremec transmissions goes

5spd

T5

T-45

T-3650

Tko-600

6spd

T-56

TR-6060

I will have to see if they can swap into fox body stangs.

Very easily. The T-45 was used in the 94-00 mustangs, the T-3650 was used in the 01-10 mustangs.

The T56 was used in the 03/04 cobra and the 00R. The TR-6060 is an evolution of the T-56 which is now found in the GT500

I'd definitely go with the T-45 over the T-5. It's stronger and more readily available these days.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot you've got a 2.3! It should be fine even if you tune the engine a bit.

It isn't hard at all. Just take your time. Invest in torque wrenches (I don't care, your arms are not calibrated.) and tighten everything to spec. Manual boxes are way easier than slush boxes. Just make sure you have the gearsets in the proper order and keep on test spinning everything and engage every gear before buttoning it up. Get a good book or FSM for the tranny you will buy and read it before starting the job. It sounds more intimidating than it really is.

Good advice thank you. It is something I wouldn't even try to attempt to do but reading about it on a tutorial it doesn't seem too bad.

Honestly they are super simple, it is just a matter of being meticulous and putting things where they belong and taking your time. If you are at all mechanically inclined it is an easy job. I'd even go as far as saying rebuilding a tranny is easier than pulling it out of the car. . .
